Why it matters
Food gets thrown out because nobody had a plan for it. Starting from what you already own, and cooking the stuff that spoils first, is a simple way to waste less and make fewer extra trips to the store.

Steps
- Take two or three photos: the fridge with the door open, the pantry shelf, and the freezer if you use it. Move things so labels face out.
- Open ChatGPT or Claude and attach the photos in one message. ChatGPT Free lets you upload images, with daily limits.
- Paste the prompt below and fill in your household details.
- Check the ingredient list it reads back. Photos get misread (a jar of salsa can look like pasta sauce). Correct it before it plans.
- Ask for tweaks: "Make Wednesday a 15-minute meal," "No oven on Thursday," "Swap the fish, my kid won't eat it."
- Copy the grocery list into your notes app or your store's pickup order.
Copy-paste prompt
Here are photos of my fridge, pantry and freezer. Step 1: List every ingredient you can see. Mark anything you're not sure about with a "?". Wait for me to confirm before step 2. Step 2 (after I confirm): Plan 5 dinners for [NUMBER] people. - Use what I have first. Cook the most perishable items (fresh produce, open dairy, raw meat) in the first 2 dinners. - Max [30] minutes of active cooking on weeknights. - Allergies / won't eat: [LIST]. Treat allergies as strict. - Equipment I have: [e.g. stovetop, oven, air fryer, no grill]. - For each dinner: name, ingredients I already have, anything missing, 5-step method. Step 3: One combined grocery list of only the missing items, grouped by store section.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the ingredient check. If the AI misreads the photo, the whole plan is off.
- Trusting AI on allergies. Read the actual labels. AI can't see "may contain" warnings in a photo.
- Keeping leftovers too long because the plan stretches them. FoodSafety.gov's cold storage chart lists 3 to 4 days in the fridge for cooked meat and most leftovers.
- Asking for health or diet advice. For medical diets, talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian.
- Planning seven dinners. Five leaves room for leftovers and nights out.
