What shipped
On Sept 17, 2026, OpenAI released ChatGPT for Word. It opens ChatGPT in a sidebar inside Word, where it can draft from notes, summarize the open document, revise selected text and adjust headings and formatting. It's on all ChatGPT plans, including Free. Word uses the same Microsoft add-in as ChatGPT for Excel and PowerPoint, so if you installed it for one of those, you already have it.

Why it matters
A lot of small-business paperwork lives in Word: proposals, scopes of work, letters, policies. Until now, using AI meant copying text into a browser and pasting it back, which breaks formatting. The sidebar works on the document you have open.
Steps
- Open the ChatGPT listing in Microsoft Marketplace and select Get it now. Follow the install steps. You can get it with a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account.
- Open Word, then open ChatGPT from the ribbon.
- Sign in with your ChatGPT account. If you use a workspace from work, select that workspace.
- Open a document. For a first test, paste your rough notes from a job or a client meeting into a blank page.
- In the sidebar, try: "Turn these notes into a one-page proposal for a homeowner, with headings for Scope, What's included, What's not included, Timeline and Next steps. Keep every number exactly as written."
- To fix one section, select the text in Word first, then tell ChatGPT what to change and what to keep.
- Before sending, ask: "List every price, date and promise in this document so I can check them." Check each one yourself.
- Save a copy before big changes. OpenAI's help page recommends this, since ChatGPT can change content you meant to keep.
Copy-paste prompts
Turn the notes on this page into a client proposal for [CLIENT TYPE]. Sections: Scope, What's included, What's not included, Timeline, Price, Next steps. Plain English. Keep every number, date and name exactly as written in my notes. If something's missing, add [NEEDS INFO] instead of making it up.
Read this document and list every price, date, deadline, guarantee and promise, with the sentence it appears in. Don't change anything.
Rewrite the selected section for a customer with no industry knowledge. Keep the facts and any defined terms the same.
Common mistakes
- Expecting it to read other files on your computer. It only works with the open document, so paste in anything else it needs.
- Trusting complex tables. OpenAI says complex formatting, tables and charts may need manual fixes.
- Expecting your ChatGPT memory or past chats to carry over. Add-in conversations are kept apart from your ChatGPT history, and memory doesn't come with you.
- Forgetting the usage limits. Your plan's limits apply. On plans that include Codex, Word draws from the same usage allowance as Codex and other premium features, so heavy use in Word leaves less for those.
- Using it for final legal wording. Have contracts reviewed by the right professional.
Work accounts: if ChatGPT doesn't show up in Word, your Microsoft 365 admin may need to allow the add-in. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT for Word is turned on by default starting Oct 1, 2026, and workspace admins can switch it on or off in the ChatGPT admin console.
